Make Fill Your Own Christmas Crackers

This year I have decided to fill my own Christmas crackers because I hate the cheap and nasty contents of ready filled Christmas crackers. I bought a make your own kit and have filled the crackers with chocolates.

Each cracker contains either two mini slabs or two mini bears depending on the recipient.

All done!

Birthday Time

November and December is a busy time for birthdays in our house with all four of us having birthdays in these two months. As a result it is also a busy time for making cards. Here are my latest creations, firstly my daughter's card

Inside her card was a little surprise...

She had wanted a hoodie from a certain shop and I had given her the money to buy it before her birthday. On her birthday I wanted her to have a little reminder of what her gift was so I wrote inside the card 'Open to see your present'...

She was very impressed with it which made me happy because she doesn't share my passion for crafts.

Next, my son's card

The green frame around the teddy was cut from tissue paper and then crumpled. Aren't the little metal spanners and hammer cute? (Woodware brads). The tyre print background was made by rolling tyres (old toy cars) over an inkpad and then rolling over card.

I also made my first Christmas card

All pictures are coloured with koh-i-noor pencils blended with solvent. I'm still not very good at getting the shadow/light correct but I do enjoy all the practise!

Birthday Wishes

Oops! I promised to show this card yesterday but forgot! I made it for a trendy friend who enjoys going to rock concerts - I think the background paper is very fitting.

The gold leaf on the tag is from some cheap jewellery. The image is coloured with Koh-i-noor pencils, I really battle to get the shading right, what should be shadow and what should be light. Does anybody else battle with this?

I see it's been quite a while since my last post!!

I've been doing some card making, this one for my Aunt who loves cats

I had in mind to use rusty staples to make the two 'X's but I didn't have anything like that so I used two thin strips of card instead. I guess I could also have stitched them with thread.

Don't you love the little fish bone? It came inside a packet of animal buttons that I bought a few years back

I got the idea for this halloween wreath from this book. I started preparing to make it in January (!!) and when I bought the embroidery thread the lady in the store asked me what I was going to make. When I said 'a halloween wreath' she looked at me kind of strange 'I'm a great procrastinator, so I have to start now' I replied.

Kew Gardens

Sorry everyone, I've been a really bad blogger lately.

In June we visited Kew Gardens, our first visit to the gardens even though we have lived in this country for 12 years.

Join me on a blog walk through the gardens...

On entering you soon notice the enormous trees.

A walk along one of the many paths brought us to King William's Temple surrounded by Mediterranean plants.

Then to one of the glasshouses

where you could climb the spiral staircase and look down from the overhead walkway

onto the lush green foliage below.

We stopped for an early stop lunch...oops no pic (it was only a sandwich!) so you haven't missed much!
We could see the Pagoda from where we sat.

Then to the Japanese Gateway

where we were treated to a spectacular show by Mr Peacock

all because this little squirrel

had come down from a nearby tree to steal some of Mr Peacock's food. Mr Peacock was having none of it and he puffed up and started shaking his feathers in protest.

What a magnificent sight!

Ever wondered what goes on behind all that??...This!

We saw this little Robin on our way

to the Treetop Walkway.

After climbing the stairs

it was great to walk among the tree tops.

Back on the ground and time for a short rest beside the water

feeding the ducklings.

A quick glance at the map and I realized that we hadn't seen something that I really wanted to see, so a l-o-n-g walk later we arrived at Queen Charlotte's Cottage

complete with doorman in period costume standing at the door. Unfortunately no photographs were allowed inside.

Exhausted we head towards the car, passing these lovely wooden mushrooms in the children's play area

During the day we saw so many beautiful flowers

my favorite being this one, the petals looked like crushed tissue paper

it appears I'm not the only one who likes it (can you see the bee?)

A Day in Brighton

A couple of weeks ago we went to Brighton for the day....looks like we weren't the only ones to have this great idea!!

The weather was amazing

As I sat on the beach I tried to photograph the seagulls flying overhead

Do you know how difficult it is to get a perfect picture??

Perhaps I should stick to taking pictures of things that stand still?

The water looked so inviting

I loved the shopping!! These shops are along the seafront

But the best place to shop is in The Lanes, a maze of narrow streets with a wonderful selection of shops

That's where we spotted this delightful gentleman. I felt like I had stepped back in time!

Walking in Wiltshire

It was half term holidays last week and we did a couple of day trips. First was a visit to Caen Hill Locks which are on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire. There are 29 locks over a distance of 2 miles. All the locks are manually operated and I was glad that I was on foot and not in a boat, it took the boats hours to get through.

Not only do I love the food in Nando's restaurants but I also love the decor.

Sunday Stroll

We found another new place to walk.

I loved all the variation in the vegetation, sometimes we were walking under tall trees

then the trees became more sparse

and it became dry, open grassland

then we came to a stream

followed by more trees and ferns

we came across this boarded walk way that seemed to go on forever

which some considerate person had put there because (as we soon realised) it went through a swamp

Time for a rest!

The theme of the day was definitely 'holes'...

It's A Boy Card

Inspired by the beautiful scrapbook pages on my sister-in-law's blog I made this card for friends whose first baby arrived over the weekend.

I stamped a postage mark onto the envelope and am really pleased with how it came out.

I wanted to make my own wrapping paper so I stamped onto brown paper. Unfortunately the ink turned really dark on the brown paper. Here's the card and gift almost ready to go.

Easter Treat

I love these South African Easter eggs

They have an outer candy shell (similar to Smarties) and inside they have a layer of chocolate. They look just like hens eggs from the outside!

Using a small terracotta flower pot, one of the above eggs and a stamped image from Elzybells, I made this

Mother's Day

Today is Mother's Day here in the UK. My lovely family surprised me with a box of my favorite chocolates

What, no picture of the whole box?? No way!!!Because then you would see just how many I have already eaten!!

I love this hand made sign hanging in a shop window in town. I couldn't get the whole thing into one pic and it was really difficult to take with the shiny glass but I'm sure you get the idea

Happy Valentine's Day

I hope you have had a good day! Each year I like to surprise my family at the breakfast table and this year I decided to cut a very sparkly piece of gift wrap into 4 'place mats'.

I also bought each member of the family a small gift - heart shaped pencils for my son who is crazy about pencils (!!)

a tiny teddy for my daughter (sorry about the bad pic)

and for my husband a box of his favorite chocolates.

And for me I hear you ask? Well, I originally bought Hubby a very small box of his favorite chocolates but then I saw the same chocolates in special Valentine's packaging, so I got him those instead and I got the small box.

He's already eaten the whole box!!!!

Love Cupcakes

Yesterday my son had cooking at school, they were going to make Pineapple Upside Down Cake. We measured out the ingredients the night before, all ready for him to take to school in the morning but both he and I forgot about the butter in the fridge! He went ahead and baked without telling the teacher about the missing butter (smart kid!) The end result looked very good despite being a little hard and flat. When he got home, feeling disappointed with his flopped cake (I know that feeling well!) he decided to bake cupcakes.

A few weeks ago I bought these lovely baking cases and edible heart sprinkles, planning to use them on Valentine's Day.

Knowing that my shares were down, there was only one way to save the day...

Happy New Year everyone - it's been a while since I last posted. I hope you had a good Christmas and are ready to face the year ahead.

Life in the UK has slowed down somewhat after the deluge of snow we received earlier in the week. The children had one day back at school and then schools were closed for the rest of the week - much to the delight of my kids.

Easily Distracted

I can be summed up with two words - easily distracted! Just ask my family, they will agree.
I started this blog with the intention of showcasing my handmade cards but then I got distracted. Anyway, for those of you who have missed seeing a card from me, I made this one over the weekend. The words are printed (Microsoft Word) onto a clear transparency film, which I then put on top of the ribbon and stickers. Not sure if you can see this in the photo.

Caught in the act

Remember our sunflower from this post? Last week I cut the flower head off and hung it in a tree, wondering if the birds would find it. Well, I didn’t have to wait too long - yesterday I noticed these two... can you see two? Click on the pic to enlarge it, one bird is on the branch, just above the sunflower and one higher up the same branch camouflaged in the leaves. From my bird book I would guess that they are Great Tits (wonder who gave them that name?)

It was lovely to watch them, they would come down from the branch to get a seed, then fly up into the leaves where they would try to break open the seed by holding it in their beaks and ‘hammering’ it on the branch, their little heads and bodies bobbing up and down.

Sorry the pics are not the greatest, I think it's time for a new camera.

Autumn in the Allotments

Our house backs onto allotments. If you are not familiar with them, they are small pieces of land that the local council (usually) rents out to people so that they can grow vegetation. I guess during the war people grew food but these days people seem to have different motivations for having an allotment.

Most people have a shed

Which they decorate in various ways

Some plots have personality

(I love this cat keeping watch over this tiny pond)

Some plots are neat, tidy and organized

Some are just plain messy

Some people grow fruit and vegetables

Some people grow flowers

Some have a plentiful harvest

Some not so plentiful

And some visitors go home with a handful of seeds so that next summer they can hopefully grow some of those huge sunflowers.

Super Tuesday - the British way

Heritage Weekend

Spider Catcher

I hate it when I find one of these in the house (like I did today). Sorry for the bad pic but I didn't want to get too close.

Even though I don't like spiders and bugs, I don't like to kill them either. So I use my very own design Spider Catcher - a real high tech gadget!! to catch them. Cut the bottom off of a large plastic bottle (the bigger the bottle, the further away from the spider you can stay!) - keep the cap tightly screwed on.

To catch a spider, hold the cap end and place the bottle over the spider. Slide a piece of cardboard under the cut off end and your spider should be safely inside.

Release the spider outside. Result - one happy spider instead of a dead one!

Not much happening here today. Andy Murray is playing tennis at Wimbledon, England Lions are playing cricket against Australia and Jerry is swimming! He has found a rather dirty 'pool' of water to cool off in. When he hops out (pardon the pun!) I'll clean it out so that next time he has a more pleasurable experience.

our newest resident. Rescued from jaws of a cat, he has been given a new home in our back garden. He has the longest, springiest legs and he can really jump far, hence his name. We call him Jerry for short.

I've not done much today. I visited a friend for coffee this morning and ended up staying almost 4 hours.
This afternoon, despite having an ever growing laundry pile and a house that Flylady would NOT be proud of, I felt some creativity coming on so I made this card for my little niece who is turning 4. I'm really pleased with the way it came out. I used Elzybells teddy heart wreath stamp for the teddy (minus the wreath). The flowers and butterfly are foam.

And don't you just love the back? That Elzybells stamp is so cute!

My very own rabbit egg cosy! I know it's a bit late for Easter (early for next!!) but at least I actually finished it. I am very good at starting projects and never finishing them. I had some trouble with the face and getting the head to the right shape and even now it is still not perfect but will just have to do as my first attempt. I am privileged to own a one of a kind, original Little Cotton Rabbit - called Albie. Even looking closely at Albie's head for guidance, I still couldn't get it right. I have a new respect for Julie at Little Cotton Rabbits, she has a busy life and yet still manages to produce such gorgeous little knitted animals.

I Hate Parsley

I have always suspected that I don't like parsley and I have just confirmed it. This week I bought a bag of baby leaf herb salad. I love salad but on my first mouthful of this salad something just didn't taste right. Further investigation (reading the back of the packet) revealed that the offensive little green parsley leaf was the culprit. See photo below - those are the ones I removed from my salad.

So it's official - I hate parsley!

Annual Reminder

The large flower above is a metal accent by Carolee's Creations.

Whilst rearranging Chloe's birthday cards, I came across this one made by my Mum:

Mum's cards are always produced on a tight budget but always come out beautifully. This one has an image printed on transparency film (for overhead projectors) and is attached to the card with brads and paper flowers.

After contemplating creating my own blog for well over a year now, I have finally taken the plunge and here I am! I always seemed to have so much swirling around in my head and thought that if I had a blog I would have so much to say but now that I am here, I seem strangely short of words!

I had to make my own pompoms as I recently gave away huge bag of unwanted craft sundries, thinking that I'll never use that stuff again. Isn't that always the case....keep something for years and never use it, give it away and suddenly you need something that was in that bag!
